Tu Tu Main Main

Tu Tu Main Main, was an Indian television comedy show which aired on Doordarshan and later STAR Plus (after 1996) directed by Sachin Pilgaonkar. The title Tu Tu Main Main is phrase in Hindi meaning arguments and bickering.
The serial first started on National network Doordarshan's DD 2 Channel, where it ended in 1995, thereafter it was taken up by STAR Plus in 1996, in all it ran for 11 years. It also had rerun on 9X and STAR Utsav channels. After its success, a sequel to the serial with same themes and extended cast, Kadvee Khatti Meethi (2006) was also directed by Sachin.

Hum Paanch was centered on a middle-class couple with five daughters. All five had distinct personalities of their own and each episode basically showed the girls trying to sort out various problems or issues. The genre was comedy and the sitcom had high popularity ratings. Vidya Balan played the role of the second daughter. She was called Radhika and portrayed a geeky, awkward but intelligent girl. People dressed in rabbit costumes and a bunch of people dancing in a garden made for a really funny campaign for Lijjat papad. Nonetheless, the kurram kurram was the perfect use of onomatopoeia for these crispy papads. I also distinctly remember the little rabbit that would pop up in the end!

Also my most favorite serial on Doordarshan back in 1987, featuring Master Manjunath as Swami in "Swami and Friends"; The most loved character on Indian Television. He somehow felt like a mirror image of myself and undoubtedly of thousands of children across the world. Scripted by the great story writer R.K Narayan, direction by Shankar Nag, music by Sharang Dev and life like characters enacted by Master Manjunath, Anant Nag, Girish Karnad and others glued indian audiences to the one and only channel Doordarshan on Sunday Mornings.
